The Return of The X-Files

Mulder.

Do you see strange lights in the sky

when you're driving home at night?

behind your ears you can't explain?

Do you secretly suspect that that new guy

in the sales department is actually a golem?

If your answer to any of these questions is yes,

then you don't need me to remind you

Sunday night sees the return

of one of the most beloved cult shows of all time,

The X-Files.

Scully, listen to me.

I've been misled, we've been misled.

[Host] Believe it or not, it's been almost 14 years

since Chris Carter's original show went off the air.

And while the series spun off two movies

in the intervening years,

neither were able to recapture

that blend of long-running conspiracy theory

and monster-of-the-week crime procedural

that the original show had.

Well, the truth is out there, and the blend is back.

Mulder, what are you talking about?

[Host] David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson

have returned to play paranormal investigating agents

Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, reuniting after all these years

to face down a common threat that menaces us all.

We don't want to spoil what that is,

but suffice it to say that the aliens

might not be who we thought they were.

I know why O'Malley came to us, Scully.

And that girl is the key, Scully,

Sveta is the key to everything.

And Mulder and Scully

aren't the only returning heroes.

Agent Skinner, the lone gunman,

even smoking man are all part of the tapestry again.

And while this new show is technically a mini-series,

only six episodes long,

it still manages to bring back

that propelling through-line of a conspiracy theory

without losing some of the urban legend oddity-of-the-week

that made the original series so compelling.

Uber?

Hitchhiked.

Relax, Scully, I'm kidding.

Of course, the world has changed a lot

in the almost 20 years since the show originally premiered,

and there are plenty of jokes

about the crazy times that we live in now.

At one point, Scully jokes about being pre-Google,

but after the first 10 minutes or so

of the premiere episode,

things settle down into the regular routine.

Mulder's a weirdo, Scully's a skeptic,

and we just want those crazy kids to work it out

and save the world.

I'm always happy to see you.

And I'm always happy to find a reason.

We know you want to believe,

so go ahead, it's safe to.
