Watch London Workers Build 54 Escalators in a 2-Minute Timelapse

[Voiceover] The tunnels have been dug,

the concrete poured, the tracks have been laid down,

and now, it's time to prepare Crossrail

for the 200 million people expected to ride

the brand new train line into and out of London every year.

And, because those people won't feel much like

trudging up and down stairs all the time,

Crossrail workers are busy installing 54 escalators

in six stations, a process you can see here

in an oddly mesmerizing time lapse.

Crossrail's Elizabeth Line running from east to west

will start serving riders late next year

after nearly a decade of work.

Eventually, the $19 billion train line

will run more than 60 miles, making it easier

for people living on the outskirts of the capital

to work and play within the city limits.

Now that eight boring machines have dug out

more than 26 miles of new tunnels under London,

the project is about 85% complete,

and it's time for the human facing touches.

Before the Elizabeth Line opens,

Crossrail workers will install a total of 81 escalators,

running nearly two miles in total.

Each will operate at a 30 degree angle,

most of them running at a stately 1.1 miles per hour.

So when it's finally your turn

to take the brand new train into the heart of London,

you'll be able to look around and enjoy the view

on your way back up to the surface.
