Rogue Anthropic Agent Submitted Fake Tip in Unsolved Homicide Case
Released on 10/12/2026
[Narrator] An Anthropic AI model submitted a false tip
to an unsolved murder case in Philadelphia
in what's though to be the first known instance
of rogue AI agents fabricating information to authorities.
The Philadelphia Police Department said
that the tip was submitted on July 18th,
but was flagged as spam
and never passed on to investigators.
In a report detailing the incident
and other examples of unintended behavior of its models,
Anthropic said Claude Haiku 4.5 had been tasked
with generating and performing tasks
on randomly selected webpages.
Its instructions, however,
did not rule out form submissions, leading the model to say
that it may have information regarding this case.
Anthropic said it discovered the breach on September 28th
and shut down the testing process.
But police in Philadelphia criticized the company
for not alerting them until October 7th,
more than two months after the fake tip had been submitted.
