Gallery: Sugar Drops: 10 Pop Culture Moments for Twinkies
01ghostbusters
The Twinkie is iconic. Pretty much everyone knows what they look like, taste like, even smell like. And that – legend has it – they'll last forever. Well, sort of. Hostess Brands, the makers of Twinkies, [filed a motion](http://www.seattlepi.com/news/texas/article/Hostess-moves-to-liquidate-after-crippling-strike-4043395.php) to liquidate Friday, meaning the company may not be around much longer ([maybe](http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2012/11/16/twinkies-shelf-life-may-last-a-little-longer/)). But even if the cake-y creamy concoction does meet its end, it leaves behind a pop culture legacy that spans decades, so even if that urban legend about Twinkies surviving the apocalypse or whatever isn't really true, the handy snacks are likely to live on in comic-book collections, TV reruns and DVD collections, and one-liners for a very long time. Click through the gallery above to get a taste of some of the best Twinkie moments and start stockpiling for the zombie invasion just in case – the last Twinkie is [already on eBay](http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Worlds-Last-Twinkie-/160923706404) – or [sign the petition](http://www.politico.com/politico44/2012/11/petition-wants-obama-to-save-twinkies-149789.html) to get President Obama to save them. __Above:__ [*Ghostbusters*]( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087332/) ------------------------------------------------------- Only Dr. Egon Spengler could make an analogy about a 35-foot-long Twinkie seem completely scientific and in *Ghostbusters* he does it with aplomb. (Side note: Remember when it was totally normal for everyone in movies to smoke?)
02die-hard-2
[*Die Hard*](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095016/) -------------------------------------------------- Breaking the stereotype, Sergeant Al Powell in *Die Hard* was a cop obsessed with Twinkies, not doughnuts. It was a revolutionary act. Thank you, citizen.
03family-guy
*Family Guy* ------------ Playing on the Twinkies-last-forever meme, the family of *Family Guy* survived Y2K (remember that?) by occupying a Twinkie factory in "[Da Boom!](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Da_Boom)"
04batman-2
Batman comics ------------- Starting the late 1970s, Hostess did a series of ads in popular comic book series. This example of Batman saving the day with Twinkies is just [one of many](http://www.tomheroes.com/Comic%20Ads/hostess%20ads/hostess_ads.htm).
05robot-chicken
[*Robot Chicken*](http://robotchicken.com/) ------------------------------------------- The sugary snack food battles it out with vegetation Wild West-style in this [skit from *Robot Chicken*](http://video.adultswim.com/robot-chicken/twinkies-rule.html) with a surprise ending (for the gun-toting Twinkie, at least).
06the-iron-giant-2
[*The Iron Giant*](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129167/) -------------------------------------------------------- This moment in *The Iron Giant* above is brief, but it's highly likely some kids (and probably adults, to be honest) took a cue from this kid to begin injecting extra creamy goodness into their golden sponge cake after seeing this scene. (Thanks, Brad Bird.)
07the-simpsons-2
[*The Simpsons*](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096697/) ------------------------------------------------------ It was just a quick sight-gag but when Apu gets a package of Twinkies to regain its shape with little effort (above, in Spanish), everyone gets the joke.
08twinkie-defense
[The Twinkie Defense](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twinkie_defense) ------------------------------------------------------------------- The so-called "Twinkie defense" didn't start out as a pop culture reference, but it became one. When San Francisco city supervisor Dan White was accused in the murders of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, part of his defense was that what he had eaten had played a part in the mental distress he was under at the time that could've lead to the shootings of his fellow politicians. Even though the level to which Twinkies actually came up in the court proceedings is debated (it's [largely considered a myth](http://www.sfgate.com/health/article/Myth-of-the-Twinkie-defense-The-verdict-in-2511152.php)), but the idea of his "Twinkie defense" persisted, even getting [name-dropped some 18 years later](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117979/quotes) in the movie *The Truth About Cats and Dogs*.
09wall-e-3
[*Wall-E*](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0910970/) ------------------------------------------------ Playing on the notion that Twinkies last forever (or some rough equivalent thereof), one of the cream-filled goodies shows up in Wall-E's collection room long after Earth has been left for the droid to clean up.
10zombieland
[*Zombieland*](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1156398/) ---------------------------------------------------- In the wake of a massive zombie apocalypse, all the walking dead killer Tallahassee really wanted was a nice, fresh Twinkie (no Sno Balls, thank you very much). It really is the little things.
