Prepare to Get Scared Like It's 1983 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Want to know what set the tone for horror movies in the 1980s? Watch *The Evil Dead*. Kendrick Lamar Will Be Bringing the Spirit of '90s Compton to Austin -------------------------------------------------------------------- Emcee Kendrick Lamar is undoubtedly one of the best artists in hip-hop right now. He's also the embodiment of nostalgia for 1990s Southern California rap. Not only is he a Dr. Dre protégé, his work is peppered with references to the days of The Dogg Pound. See for example his single "Poetic Justice," which not only samples Janet Jackson's '90s bedroom jam "Any Time, Any Place" but borrows its name from the 1993 John Singleton film in which she starred. And if the video (above) isn't an homage to the director's early-'90s L.A.-based films, we'll eat a black Compton baseball hat. He's playing a ton of shows [in Austin in 2013](http://sxsw.com/music/news/spotify-back-sxsw-2013) – a perfect time to relive 1993 in Cali.

Joss Whedon Is Screening an Adaptation of a Shakespeare Play ------------------------------------------------------------ The tale of Joss Whedon's creation of *Much Ado About Nothing* is practically the stuff of legend at this point: During a 12-day break amidst the insanity of making *The Avengers*, he decided to bring some friends over and adapt a classic Shakespeare play. Using the original text. In black-and-white. Whedon has spent most of his career doing genre work (space westerns, vampire stuff, a comic book adaptation), so it'll be interesting to see [what he does with the Bard](http://schedule.sxsw.com/2013/events/event_FS13755) – someone whose work is about as far from genre as you can get. *Photo courtesy Roadside Attractions*
