Where would we be without the Simpsons, America's favorite nuclear family? In a world without Bart's furious [chalkboard scribblings](http://www.simpsoncrazy.com/lists/blackboard). A world without [couch gags](http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Couch_gag). A world without [Squishees](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Products_produced_from_The_Simpsons#Squishee) and [Duff beer](http://www.neatorama.com/2011/05/29/duff-beer-yes-it-does-exist/) and "[D'oh](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%27oh!)!" Sunday marks the Season 23 debut of [The Simpsons](http://www.thesimpsons.com/) -- a season that will include the 500th episode of America’s longest-running animated program. To mark this milestone, we asked Wired.com staffers to name their all-time favorite episodes, lines, nerdy send-ups and moments from the show. The picks kept rolling in, but we narrowed them down to 10. Enjoy them all, in chronological order, in the video gallery above. *The Simpsons* airs Sundays at 8 p.m./7 p.m. Central on Fox. 02season-4-episode-12-marge-vs-the-monorail
'Marge vs. the Monorail' ------------------------ *Season 4, Episode 12* This parody song has basically erased the actual *Flintstones* song in my head. *—Chris Kohler* Without fail it's the Monorail episode, specifically the send-up of "The Music Man" (below) that is "[The Monorail Song](http://www.area51newmexico.com/simpsons/simpsons_monorail.html)." *—Josh Strom* <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js" type="text/javascript"></script><object class="BrightcoveExperience" id="myExperience1161759758001"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF"></param> <param name="width" value="660"></param> <param name="height" value="423"></param> <param name="playerID" value="3698508001"></param> <param name="publisherID" value="1564549380"></param> <param name="isVid" value="true"></param> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true"></param> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="1161759758001"></param></object><script type="text/javascript"> runMobileCompatibilityScript('myExperience1161759758001', 'anId'); </script><script type="text/javascript">brightcove.createExperiences();</script>
03season-5-episode-15-deep-space-homer
'Deep Space Homer' ------------------ *Season 5, Episode 15* It apes *2001: A Space Odyssey*, the greatest space movie of all time, then follows that up with one of the most-quoted Simpsons moments, the [Overlord meme](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_Brockman#Cultural_influence), when Kent Brockman says, "I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords." *—Michael Calore*
04season-6-episode-2-lisas-rival
'Lisa’s Rival' -------------- *Season 6, Episode 2* This was one of the funniest episodes for a *Star Wars* nerd. Instant classic. Also, Principal Skinner’s fascination with the toys was perfect. *—Simon Lutrin*
05season-7-episode-5-lisa-the-vegetarian
'Lisa the Vegetarian' --------------------- *Season 7, Episode 5* One of my favorite episodes of all time is when Lisa becomes a vegetarian. There are just so many classic parts: The "You Don't Win Friends With Salad" song, the flying pig, the hot dog contents thought bubble. And if that weren’t enough, cameos by Paul and Linda McCartney. I'm a vegetarian, and the exaggerated portrayal of both sides is pretty accurate. *—Keith Axline*
06season-8-episode-5-bart-after-dark
'Bart After Dark' ----------------- *Season 8, Episode 5* The musical revue in which, among other spectacular production numbers, the town's hookers sing, "We put the spring in Springfield." A great send-up of and homage to Busby Berkeley films of the 1930s. *—Randy Alfred*
07season-8-episode-9-the-mysterious-voyage-of-homer
'The Mysterious Voyage of Homer' -------------------------------- *Season 8, Episode 9* The idea of Homer on a spiritual quest, a la [Carlos Castaneda](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Castaneda), is hilarious. His "spirit guide" is a coyote version of Johnny Cash. Coyote: "There’s a lesson you must learn." Homer: "If it’s about laying off the insanity peppers, I’m way ahead of you." Trippy fun. *—Annaliza Savage*
08season-9-episode-12-bart-carny
'Bart Carny' ------------ *Season 9, Episode 12* I still use "It's the Carny Code" in conversation. *—Angela Watercutter*
09season-22-episode-3-moneybart
'MoneyBART' ----------- *Season 22, Episode 3* Spiked with graffiti jokes, this wild extended version of *The Simpsons* couch gag spirals out of control in the hands of street artist Banksy, who turns the intro into a [subversive statement about overseas animation sweatshops](http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/11/the-simpsons-explains-its-button-pushing-banksy-opening/). *—Lewis Wallace*
10season-22-episode-19-the-real-housewives-of-fat-tony
'The Real Housewives of Fat Tony' --------------------------------- *Season 22, Episode 19* I'm a big fan of Philip Glass, so I love all the [*Koyaanisqatsi*](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koyaanisqatsi) references that pop up occasionally on *The Simpsons*." *—Matt Fisher*
