Nokia 8.3 V 5G UW Camera Samples

Nokia 8.3, ultrawide camera. The ultrawide camera lets you take in sweeping shots like this, but the image detail is lackluster. Peek in and you'll see the brickwork on the church is very patchy. I do like the colors and the white balance here though. Compare this with the following photo.

Google Pixel 5, ultrawide camera. The Pixel's shot has a warmer tone, but it blows the Nokia away when it comes to sheer detail. Seriously, zoom in and you'll see that the delicate characteristics on the church are stunning.

Nokia 8.3, Night mode. It's impossible to dislike this photo. *Just look at his face\!* But I want to point out that I don't live in an orange home. My walls are dark yellow and I was quite startled to see the Nokia's result after the image finished processing.

Nokia 8.3, Portrait mode. In a vacuum, this photo is solid. The blur outline is excellently placed around the subject with few issues. Some areas of this bokeh effect look odd, like the top center. But more importantly, the colors are completely wrong. Everything looks as though saturation and contrast have been cranked up to 11. Compare this with the following photo.

Photograph: Julian Chokkattu05Google Pixel 5, Portrait mode. I'd have liked to see a slightly stronger blur effect here, but Google nails the colors and contrast here. It's very close to what it was like in real life, and you don't lose a lot of detail to shadows. Now go back and the Nokia photo will look like it's using a filter made for a horror Hollywood flick.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu06Nokia 8.3, ultrawide Night mode. This is an OK low-light shot considering it's the ultrawide camera (ultrawides usually perform poorly in these conditions). It's not as sharp as I'd like.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu07Nokia 8.3, Portrait mode. Here's another portrait for you. You'll see the same faults as the comparison earlier. Colors are several shades darker, and the heavy contrast masks details like the texture of the backpack strap. Compare this with the following photo.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu08Google Pixel 5, Portrait mode. This is a well-exposed image. The blur effect isn't perfect, but the subject has a natural-looking skin tone, the rest of the colors are pleasant, and nothing is *too* dark. You can pick up a lot more details in the hair, backpack strap, and eyes.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu09Nokia 8.3, main camera. The colors are egregiously off the mark on this shot. The sky is a strange, pale baby blue, and now there's an unnatural lack of shadows. Everything is too bright.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu10Nokia 8.3, main camera. Juggle this photo with the following one and you'll see exactly how much HMD is boosting the colors. It really does look like a strange filter. It doesn't manage the sky that well either—it's completely white with no visible clouds whatsoever.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu11Google Pixel 5, main camera. Immediately you'll notice that the colors look … normal. The sky is also not blown out here; you can actually see gray clouds\!
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu12Nokia 8.3, main camera. There's a slight green twinge to this photo I'm not a fan of, but otherwise, it's solid. There's decent detail, though the sky is blown out.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu13Nokia 8.3, ultrawide camera. Boosted colors? Check. Heavier contrast? Check. Bright white sky? Check. Compare this to the following photo.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu14Google Pixel 5, ultrawide camera. The Pixel doesn't go as wide as the Nokia, which is unfortunate, but you get a sharper image overall with pleasant colors.
