Hank Williams' *The Lost Notebooks* ----------------------------------- The all-star Hank Williams tribute album *Timeless* won the Grammy for country album of the year in 2002. Mary Martin was an executive producer on that record, and soon after working on it, she was approached by Peggy Lamb at Williams' publishing company. Lamb had a cardboard box containing four notebooks and scattered scraps of paper full of unrecorded lyrics passed to the company after Williams' death. Martin approached Bob Dylan, who pondered the lyrics for a bit then went to work with musicians such as Jack White, Norah Jones and Lucinda Williams to craft songs to accompanying these previously unreleased gems. __Lost:__ Roughly 60 years ago (some of the notebooks [date back to the 1950s](http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2011/09/25/arts/25HANK5SILO.html)) __Recovered:__ Officially released in October by [Egyptian Records, the Country Hall of Fame and Columbia Records](http://www.amazon.com/Lost-Notebooks-Hank-Williams/dp/B005F23NMK). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBUFGFKHk-o

Grand Ole Party's *Under Our Skin* ---------------------------------- Back when Dee Dee of the [Dum Dum Girls](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dum_Dum_Girls) went by the name Kristin Gundred, she sang and played drums for jagged, San Diego pop-rock band Grand Ole Party. The group had one official release before breaking up (2007's *Humanimals*), but recorded a second, [*Under Our Skin*](http://pitchfork.com/news/43639-pre-dum-dum-girls-bands-lost-lp-released/), with producer Ben H. Allen (who's worked with Animal Collective and Deerhunter among others). The Dum Dum Girls released an album in September; it was only fair to let Grande Ole Party have its closure first. __Lost:__ 2009 __Recovered:__ Officially released in August [by DH Records](http://grandolepartymusic.com/). http://www.youtube.com/embed/elSU3qhy4mc

Oasis' 'Stop the Clocks' ------------------------ Noel Gallagher once called "[Stop the Clocks](http://www.nme.com/news/oasis/57862)" the best song he's written (though he was quick to refute that during a [fan Q&A](http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/sftw/article73524.ece) in '06). The song was intended for Oasis' *Don't Believe the Truth*, and then their greatest-hits album of the same name, but it missed the cut each time. "There are about 10 different versions and I can't decide on which one," Gallagher told fans. "It's a good song, the lyrics are great." The Oasis edition never technically surfaced, but two Gallagher solo efforts this year opened the door for him to revisit it. __Lost:__ 2001 __Recovered:__ Officially released on [Noel Gallagher's *High Flying Birds*](http://www.amazon.com/Noel-Gallaghers-High-Flying-Birds/dp/B005DHC6R0) in October by EMI. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaWD\_-0sjOA

Daft Punk's 'Drive' ------------------- Workers at [Soma Records](http://www.somarecords.com/) were digging through the Scottish electronic label's archives preparing for a 20th-anniversary release when they stumbled upon an old DAT labeled "Daft Drive." The lost track, "[Drive](http://pitchfork.com/news/44021-listen-lost-daft-punk-track-drive/)," had originally been slated to be released as *Soma25* in 1995, but two other songs pushed it to the back burner. "Soma asked these two bright-eyed and techno-bound Frenchman to finish and send 'Da Funk' to accompany 'Rollin' & Scratchin' and 'Drive' was shelved for a later date," the label said. __Lost:__ 1994 __Recovered:__ Officially released on [*Soma Records: 20 Years*](http://www.somarecords.com/shop/music/soma_951d/) in September. [Daft Punk: "Drive Unreleased 1994 (Preview)"](http://soundcloud.com/soma/daft-punk-drive-unreleased) by [soma](http://soundcloud.com/soma)

"Lost" music gets recovered all the time: Bands keep demos locked up in storage, original pressings are stumbled upon during spring cleaning at a recording studio. 2011 was littered with such previously unreleased material that finally saw the light of day. The Beach Boys' *[The Smile Sessions](http://www.nme.com/news/the-beach-boys/58949)* grabbed the most headlines, but don't look past these other must-hear (and now *can-hear*) music relics. (If you want to join the hunt for other lost bits of pop culture — from nuked sci-fi TV shows to missing movie footage — go to the [Wired Relic Wranglers](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/relicwranglers/) website.) __Above:__ Captain Beefheart's *Bat Chain Puller* -------------------------------------- Younger fans of underground music may only recognize the name from James Murphy's band-rant in "Losing My Edge," but Captain Beefheart was an experimental and abstract music legend. He recorded [*Bat Chain Puller*](http://consequenceofsound.net/2011/12/lost-captain-beefheart-album-surfaces-in-january/) with Frank Zappa as an executive producer, but a legal battle between Zappa and business partners kept it from official release. "Lost" may be a loose term for this, however — an unfinished version was sent to Virgin Records and journalists at the time, then became heavily bootlegged. Beefheart performed some tracks live and others ended up on his 1978 album *[Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiny_Beast_(Bat_Chain_Puller))*. __Lost:__ 1976 __Recovered:__ Officially announced in December 2010, officially released on Captain Beefheart's birthday, Jan. 15, 2011, by [Barfko-Swill](http://barfkoswill.shop.musictoday.com/Dept.aspx?cp=971_54317). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17cr\_WVdWmo
