iPhone 14 Pro Max, Portrait mode. This scene is tough because the window is backlighting my dog's face, yet the iPhone does a great job exposing him. You can see some grain throughout the photo, but my pup is tack sharp.

iPhone 14 Pro, main camera (12 megapixels). Compare this with the 48-megapixel version (next). By default, the iPhone 14 Pro uses a process called pixel binning on the primary camera to merge pixels so that they absorb more light, producing a 12-megapixel image that's brighter, and not as high resolution (also means normal file sizes). It's not *as* detailed and is a little brighter overall.

iPhone 14 Pro, 48-MP ProRAW. This image has a lot more detail to offer and doesn't look as *processed* as the 12-MP version. Since it's a RAW image, you have greater flexibility to control the brightness, contrast, shadows, and saturation when you edit it. But you have to manually tap the RAW button in the camera app to access the full 48-MP mode (be prepared for the slightly larger file sizes).

iPhone 14 Pro, ultrawide camera. Apple says the ultrawide camera has improved in the latest model, with a larger sensor and improved low-light capabilities. But too often, it was hard to tell the difference when compared with the iPhone 13 Pro. In fact, if you compare this image closely with the following one, you'll notice that this one is a smidge blurrier.

iPhone 13 Pro Max, ultrawide camera. This photo is a tiny bit sharper than the iPhone 14 Pro ultrawide image. I also generally like the colors a tiny bit more here.

iPhone 14 Pro, main camera. During the daytime, the iPhone hardly misses a beat. It's well-exposed, the colors are nice, and it's pretty sharp. Compare this with the following Google Pixel image.

Google Pixel 6 Pro, main camera. The Pixel photo is nearly identical in every way to the iPhone's shot, except it's a teeny bit sharper if you look very closely at some of the text.

iPhone 14 Pro, main camera. Apple's new Photonic Engine doesn't work in Night mode but in mid- to low-light scenes like this. Apple originally applied its Deep Fusion image processing technique (where it took several photos and merged the best parts) to the compressed images right after capture, but now, the Photonic Engine does this process on uncompressed images, which Apple says should result in brighter, sharper images with nicer colors. In my testing, the improvements seem to be minuscule. I like the colors here, and the scene is relatively sharp.

Google Pixel 6 Pro, main camera. The iPhone captures a bit more warmth from the sun, adding a bit more yellow into the clouds, which I like, but the Google image is slightly sharper across the board. The dock is also a little brighter overall.

iPhone 14 Pro, telephoto camera. This is taken with the 3x optical zoom, but you do now have a 2x zoom option that takes pretty clear photos thanks to the 48-MP sensor. This image is sharp, but compare it with the following one.

Google Pixel 6 Pro, 4x optical zoom. The Pixel photo just looks more natural to my eyes. The subject's skin tones are a normal shade, the exposure is right, and the colors are more pleasant.

iPhone 14 Pro, selfie camera. The front-facing camera now has autofocus, which means you should be able to expect a sharp photo in any setting (and with group selfies too). In my comparisons with the iPhone 13 Pro Max though, it was hard to see the difference. Still, this image is slightly sharper than the following one from the Pixel 6.

Google Pixel 6 Pro, selfie camera. The Pixel 6 Pro image isn't as sharp, but it does do a nicer job with the background (it's not as blown out).

iPhone 14 Pro Max, main camera. OK, compare this with the following iPhone 13 Pro photo. This is the kind of lighting where you should see some benefits of the Photonic Engine, and you can. The iPhone 14 Pro captures a tiny, tiny bit more detail in my face and I think the colors are a little nicer.

iPhone 13 Pro Max, main camera. The background is a bit better exposed here, but the iPhone 14 Pro does do a slightly better job in color and sharpness. You can *really* only tell by zooming in and analyzing closely though.

iPhone 14 Pro, Night mode on the main camera. I have generally found that Night mode gets triggered less often now on the iPhone 14 Pro, thanks to the larger sensor and the Photonic Engine. But it will still kick in for super low-light scenes like this. Compare this with the following photo.

Google Pixel 6 Pro, Night mode on the main camera. Both have similar levels of sharpness, but the greens in the iPhone 14 image are a little unnatural. Overall, the Pixel adjusts my skin tone to look nicer, whereas it's a bit too red in the iPhone image.

iPhone 14, Night mode on the main camera. Despite a standard 12-MP camera, the iPhone 14 holds its own and produces a similarly sharp image. The leaves are sharp as are the rest of the surroundings, with nice colors throughout.
