Last summer, Mozilla announced that it would rebrand. But rather than hire an agency and stage a big reveal for the new logo, Mozilla chose to conduct the rebranding out in the open.

London firm Johnson Banks created several options, and the public left comments. The winning design is "Protocol," which replaces the “ill” in “Mozilla” with the colon and twin slashes commonly found in URLs.

“Because it has a portion of URL embedded in the middle of the logo, you know this must be some kind of internet company,” says Tim Murray, Mozilla’s creative director.

The pun might help foster understanding of what Mozilla does. Say Mozilla, and most people think of Firefox, the web browser. But the company produces many products, each meant to promote web literacy and online security. The “://” winks at the company’s expansive internet roots.

Because it contains only letters, the logo also lets users attach a photo, graphics, or a GIF, without resulting in much clutter.

Plus, it's democratic: Anyone with a keyboard can type “Moz://a”—no special files necessary.
