Gallery: This Guy Has the Most OCD-Lightful Office You'll Ever See
01storage
__Storage__ A plywood false floor sits 21 inches above the real one, creating a handy space for stowing gear. Essential items like tripods are kept up front under a hatch. To access less vital stuff—like papers for Neistat's motorcycle — you unscrew a panel.
02wiring
__Wiring__ "Troubleshooting a wiring problem is a soul-killing experience," Neistat says. The studio's exposed circuitry and network cables are elaborately organized, and surge protectors are everywhere (he prefers metal variants, the kind that screw into the wall nicely).
03edit-bay
__Edit Bay__ Neistat uses iMovie HD 6, the last version before Apple overhauled it and, in his opinion, screwed it up. But his keyboard is labeled with shortcuts for Final Cut Pro. Why keep it? "I like the colors."
04cameras
__1 // The Big rig__ Neistat's main camera is a Canon 5D Mark III, the most movie-makin'-est DSLR on the market. He shoots most of his footage with an image-stabilized Tamron 24-70mm lens. __2 // Army of pocket cams__ Neistat supplements his DSLRs with a variety of inexpensive point-and-shoots. For his vérité video of Hurricane Sandy, he incorporated shots from a $350 Canon D20.
05letter-writing-station
__Letter-Writing Station__ The man types letters—lots of them. So many that he blew through his last typewriter in mere months. His current one has been going strong since February.
06production-area
__Production Area__ Just outside Neistat's office is his fully-functional mini-movie-making studio. There's a workshop, an overhead rig for shooting titles and animations, and a work space for several assistants. The desk on the left was built from a salvaged WWII ship door.
07the-man
__Casey Neistat__ At just 32 years old, Neistat has already made more than a hundred short films, won an Independent Spirit Award, and starred in an HBO series.
08my-first-camera
__History__ Neistat’s first movie camera, a Sony DCR-TRV11 MiniDV camcorder.
09the-electric-window
__The Electric Window__ Originally a 50-inch LCD TV. "I got this when I won an Independent Spirit Award for *Daddy Long Legs*." Neistat mounted the rig by the door and hard-wired it to a GoPro, giving him the exact same view as the window that it covers up. Only cooler.
10skateboards
__Skateboards__ You know, for shredding.
11surveillance
__Surveillance__ Monitors throughout the studio, like the ones above the desk here, provide views of the premises, the hallway outside, and the street in front of the building, where Neistat parks his car.
12the-battery-wall
__The Battery Wall__ Neistat conquered his battery anxiety by making charging into a religion. His studio is full to the brim with lithium ions in the process of gaining electrons. If it's not being used, it's being charged.
13the-keep
__The Keep__ Neistat backs up every frame of video he shoots. He has an old Mac Pro with 8 TB of internal hard disk space and "at least 16 terabytes" of external data storage.
