Gallery: Big, Beautiful and Badass: The 9 Coolest Android Smartphones at CES

LAS VEGAS — We knew there would be a slew of new smartphones appearing at CES 2011 — and we weren't disappointed. From Samsung to Sony Ericsson, Android-dedicated handset debuts have been surrounded by the "oohs" and "aahs" of nerd-struck admirers. We've seen the big: Motorola's Droid Bionic [touts a huge 4.3-inch display](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/01/hands-on-with-motorolas-new-droid-bionic/), yet is still outgunned by [the mammoth 4.5 inches of Samsung's Infuse](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/01/samsungs-android-powered-infuse-4g-makes-your-smartphone-look-tiny/). Even the LG Optimus 2X's respectable 4-inch screen seemed dwarf-like in comparison. [](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gadgetlab/tag/ces-2011)There's the badass: Powerhouse processors clocking in at 1 GHz and higher are in like Flynn. Motorola's Atrix 4G and LG's Optimus 2X, for instance, are [running dual-core 1-GHz NVidia Tegra 2 processors](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/01/dual-core-phones/). And then there's the beautiful: LG's Optimus Black boasts it's the "world's slimmest 9.2-mm device," while Sony Ericsson's Xperia Arc [has a thickness of only 8.7 mm at its waist](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/01/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-a-slim-gingerbread-phone-with-a-big-camera/). Being beautiful still means being thin, apparently. Whether it's brawn or beauty, these are some of the coolest Android phones we saw in Vegas this year. __Above:__ Motorola Atrix -------------- The Atrix was one of the coolest announcements Motorola made, mostly because of its WebTop Dock. If you connect the dock to a larger display like your desktop monitor, the phone outputs a desktop-like user interface. You even use a mouse and keyboard to navigate it. We got some [quality time with the Atrix](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/01/motorola-atrix-hands-on/) (despite the best efforts of Motorola's employees to stop us) and came away impressed.
02motorola-droid-bionic
Motorola Droid Bionic --------------------- We got some hands-on time with this phone, and found [Motorola's Droid Bionic](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/01/hands-on-with-motorolas-new-droid-bionic/) to be speedy and sleek, despite its relatively large size. The large screen size does come in handy, though, when checking out photos taken on the 8-megapixel back-facing camera.
03htc-evo-shift
HTC EVO Shift ------------- The [EVO Shift](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/01/htc-evo-shift-hands-on/) is the more svelte, younger brother of HTC's June-released EVO. The slide-out QWERTY keyboard caters to the crowd that isn't ready to go fully touchscreen quite yet.
04lg-optimus-2x-2
LG Optimus 2X ------------- Among the laundry list of attributes found on LG's Optimus 2X is the much-talked-about NVidia Tegra 2 dual-core 1-GHz processor. Will it prove to be as powerful as LG says it is? We'll see when we get a chance to do a full review. In the meantime, check out our initial [hands-on with the Optimus 2X](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/01/hands-on-optimus-2x/).
05sony-ericsson-xperia-arc
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc ------------------------ The [Xperia Arc](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/01/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-a-slim-gingerbread-phone-with-a-big-camera/) is aptly named, with a subtle curve that defines the contour of the phone. It's just 8.3-mm-thick at its thinnest point and sports an impressive 8-megapixel camera with a lens that opens up to f/2.4 — pretty good for a phone camera.
06lg-revolution
LG Revolution ------------- We don't know much about the LG Revolution yet. The company has not announced a price, release date or specs. What we do know, though, is that it will be LG's first Verizon 4G phone. From what we got to see at the show, it looks pretty cool.
07motorola-cliq-2
Motorola Cliq 2 --------------- The Cliq 2 is Motorola's answer to HTC's EVO Shift. Both run Froyo and have slide-out QWERTY keyboards, but the Cliq 2 has a screen display 0.1 inch larger at 3.7 inches, and its processor clocks in at 1 GHz, compared to the Shift's 800 MHz.
08samsung-infuse
Samsung Infuse -------------- We didn't get to play with the Infuse while we were at CES, but the spec sheet on the [massive phone](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/01/samsungs-android-powered-infuse-4g-makes-your-smartphone-look-tiny/) makes it something to look forward to. With a 1.3-GHz Hummingbird processor, it's definitely gonna have chops.
