Flyby-Landing Excursion Module (FLEM) mission schematic. 1. The two-part FLEM spacecraft departs Earth orbit. 2. The excursion module and parent space separate. A rocket burn occurs to enable the excursion module to reach Mars ahead of the parent spacecraft. 3. The excursion module captures into Mars orbit using rockets or aerocapture. A period of Mars exploration, possibly including a brief piloted Mars landing, ensues. 4. The excursion module departs Mars to rendezvous and dock with the parent spacecraft. 5a. The parent spacecraft ignites rocket motors to perform a powered Mars flyby that bends its course toward Earth. 5b. The excursion module performs rendezvous and docking with the parent spacecraft. After crew transfer, it is cast off. 6. The parent spacecraft returns to Earth. A small capsule bearing the crew separates, reenters the atmosphere, and lands. Note: The smiley Sun is on the original drawing, proving perhaps that FLEM's author had a sense of humor. Image: United Aircraft Research Laboratories/David S. F. Portree.11sage-sohier
