Mobile walled gardens versus Internet norms

*Really a titanic invisible struggle here. People sometimes imagine that users, customers, are getting served by these gigantic business structures. Of course they're not. Thinking that users control the cellphone industry is like thinking that soccer-mom voters control international trade negotiations.

*Why do Millennials "trust institutions" so much more than previous generations? I think it may be because Millennials have seen so many insider leaks of this kind, so many excoriations of institutions. Millennials trust institutions because they have very low expectations for institutions. They know that, somewhere in all institutions is the Kafka world of Dilbert, out of control bosses, hapless dweebs...

*The supposed power and efficacy of institutions, Big Media, Big Science, Congress, the Military-Industrial Complex, it was all faith-based. Real-life encounters with these institutions were practically always cock-ups, but since there was no way to figure out what was really going on in the walled garden, the injured people just dabbled on some holy water and proclaimed that the Lords Move in Mysterious Ways.

*Now you can be Vodafone and build the digital equivalent of the College of Cardinals and there's just, like, ceaseless screaming. Just howls. I don't know who this commentator is, I never heard of him, and I don't follow the Vodafone space that closely, but this screed of his is just, like, comically terrible. Nobody ever used to talk this way about corporate policies. There just wasn't any space in which remarks of this kind could reach the public.

*Vodafone, they just wanna make some money, folks. They just want a predictable return on investment, while the Internet is all about shattering, ruining and destabilizing businesses. If Communism had done to business what the Internet has done to business, we would have had a nuclear war.

*Somebody should write a business textbook about the clash of mobiles and the Net, but it would all be over before the book could crawl out of the dying presses and onto the desks of Ivy League students – students who all have mobiles and are throwing them away like stale popcorn.

*What a spectacle.
