Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, initially pegged as a Disney event picture for next summer, has been bumped a year. The movie-in-progress, based on the Ubisoft videogame, is now slated to open Memorial Day weekend 2010.
Why the delay? In a statement, the studio explained: "Disney wants to allow plenty of time for the post-production of *Prince of Persia * considering that the tentpole will require extensive special effects to create its fantasy world and set pieces."
A Disney rep denied speculation that the date change might be related to anxiety that next summer's *Transformers 2 *would trample the competition, including Persia: "Disney did not move the date due to the Transformers movie release date. Every summer there are Transformers 2-like films that get released."
Director Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) began shooting *Prince of Persia *in Morocco last week with Jake Gyllenhaal in the title role.
