Indie Bands Tape Shows in Houses Just Before They Are Demolished

The Burn to Shine series of documentaries by Brendan Canty and Christoph Green features prominent indie bands playing one song apiece just before bulldozers and wrecking balls take down the venue, which is always a house consigned to gentrification-related demolition.

The latest (sixth) DVD installment will feature performances by Black Lips, the Coathangers, Deerhunter, Mastodon, the Selmanaires, Shannon Wright, Snowden, and possibly others, at a house in Atlanta.

Chris Funk of the Decembrists brought 36 of his closest friends to a doomed suburban house on the outskirts of Portland, OR, highlighting what must be the most vibrant music scene in the country these days. The location was a former pig farm, sold to developers, chopped up, golf coursed, and burned. The effect of seeing a newer house violently burned to the ground is disheartening, but beautiful. It was an amazing day.
