'Sarajevo - As sweltering heat continued to plague Bosnia- Herzegovina, health authorities said Friday they would suggest the government declare a natural disaster if temperatures rose further.
Temperatures were predicted to increase, local meteorologists said, as the 41 degrees recorded in the southern city of Mostar made it the hottest city in Europe on Thursday.
The temperature was even higher on the city's streets and under direct sunlight, reaching nearly 50 degrees.
Emergency clinics across the country have dealt with twice as many emergencies as normal, with sun-stroke, heart, respiratory and stomach ailments the main problems.
Officials of the southern town of Citluk, 30 kilometres south of Mostar, meanwhile declared a natural disaster after fires on the surrounding hills threatened the town.
Strong fires were also reported around the southern town of Trebinje, near the Croatian border, as well as near the western city of Banja Luka. Firefighters said all were under control.
More than five tons of fish, mostly pike, died at a farm near the northern Bosnian town of Bosanski Samac after water temperatures in the lake exceeded 32 degrees, causing severe lack of oxygen.
