The Nordic Game Program has accepted $4.2 million in grant applications from companies hoping to earn a bit of largesse from the government. The Nordic Council of Ministers, who sound like they should be meeting in a Beowulf-esque hall somewhere, with tankards of mead in their hands, consider video games to be of cultural benefit, and so bestow grants to help with their creation.

Last year, some $913,000 in grants were awarded to five different development teams--the recipients of this year's boon will be announced at the Nordic Game Conference, to be held in mid-May. Nordic Game Program director Erik Robertson was pleased at the progress the game program has made thus far:

It is pleasing to note that the vast majority now seem to come from companies devoted solely to electronic games, companies that are already established or are in the process of getting there. This is clearly an industry making rapid progress.
