"The Hellenic American Union presents a two days event with special guests Stelarc and Bruce Sterling. The events will take place on Wednesday, April 25 and Thursday, April 26, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Hellenic American Union Auditorium (22 Massalias St., Kolonaki, 2nd floor).
"The Greek-Cypriot Australian performer Stelarc attempts to expand the limits of the human body since the end of 1960. In his performances he has connected the human body with the internet and through artificial intelligence with genetic algorithms he has invented a robotic arm and a walking machine which he moves with his muscles that are connected with electrodes. He has also shot part of the internal human body in film.
The American science fiction writer Bruce Sterling is a leading personality in the cyberpunk movement in literature, a theorist of cyberspace and one of the founders of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) that protects the freedom of speech in the context of today’s digital era. (((I wonder why people keep saying that. Do I LOOK like a founder of the EFF? Which one, I wonder – Barlow? Gilmore? Kapor?)))
On the first day of the events, April 25, 2007, a panel discussion will take place with professor Michalis Meimaris as coordinator, Bruce Sterling as the main speaker, and Anna Hatziyiannaki, who will present Stelarc’s monograph, published by the MIT Press, Stelarc himself and the director of the Eugenides Planetarium, astrophysicist Dionysis Simopoulos, as introducers. On the second day, April 26, 2007, Stelarc will present his work through audiovisual means.
