Body part replacements with tiny motors and wireless controls that supplement or manipulate human physiology in cases of damage and disease still sound like something out of a science fiction novel. But small steps in the direction have already been taken through testing and may be reaching the market as early as this year. Yet the reality may not be quite as dramatic as many of us think: the body part they've planned to replace is a tooth.

It's actually a fairly logical development, as replacement dental devices have a long and established history. Many modern ones consist of an implant embedded in the jaw and capped with a separate artificial tooth. The new systems hope to leverage this type of implant by using a hollowed-out tooth attachment that contains a microprocessor, small mechanical motors, and a wireless transceiver for remote control.
