Meiya College of International Studies at Hunan University, Beijing, is the latest institution to humiliate it's members with technology. The traditional class register has been replaced by thumb scanners in every classroom, requiring student's to "Check in".
According to Reuters, the scheme has upped attendance levels to 95%. It doesn't say what it has done for morale, but comments from students show that they are understandably a little peeved, mentioning control and concerns over leaked information.
We know more than anybody how great technology can be. Wired is all about using it for a better future. But sometimes the extra convenience is not worth the increased feelings of oppression. I know plenty of people who want to come spend their tourist Dollars in the US, for example, but will never visit while the insane security theatre plays out in the country's airports.
