When hummingbirds alighted on Mr. Makescreenname's porch this summer, he found himself desirous of photographs but unable to approach the delicate birds long enough to set up tripod and digicam. With $10 of parts, however, he assembled a DIY remote shutter release assembly for his Canon Powershot, and now he's sharing the wealth with a step-by-step how-to.

Although an earlier instructable had a great hack for opening up the camera and tapping into its electronics, I didn't want to permanently modify my camera, and wasn't sure I would be able to do the surgery without damaging something.

In essence, this lets one hack any el cheapo digicam to operate as if by remote shutter release, so as not to disturb one's subject with one's oafish presence.
