Pixelfest, 2004

You can't play it now, but you can watch

*This experiment, which is no longer active,

is a useful corrective to the notion that order "emerges"

from online smart-mobs. See, the notion was that one could add

one pixel of any color to the webpage here. You'd think

it would gravitate to some kind of image. There's an

animation that shows the history of the "Pixelfest" effort.

It's big and fat, and will take a while to load and watch.

*For a while, it struggles gamely to become a pic

of a yellow sun and a green tree, the sort of thing

a three-year-old would draw, but the efforts at

order break up in waves of defacement, and thing

is not just chaotic, but agonizingly chaotic –

like a smart mob with a lobotomy.

*Too much ease of access, not enough connectivity

among the players – that'd be my guess. A group of

ten people on IRC who had a set plan could probably

drag this thing around by the nose.
