*This experiment, which is no longer active,
is a useful corrective to the notion that order "emerges"
from online smart-mobs. See, the notion was that one could add
one pixel of any color to the webpage here. You'd think
it would gravitate to some kind of image. There's an
animation that shows the history of the "Pixelfest" effort.
It's big and fat, and will take a while to load and watch.
*For a while, it struggles gamely to become a pic
of a yellow sun and a green tree, the sort of thing
a three-year-old would draw, but the efforts at
order break up in waves of defacement, and thing
is not just chaotic, but agonizingly chaotic –
like a smart mob with a lobotomy.
*Too much ease of access, not enough connectivity
among the players – that'd be my guess. A group of
ten people on IRC who had a set plan could probably
drag this thing around by the nose.
