*I just saw Salman Rushdie pass through Pasadena
on his most recent book tour.
*Rushdie read from his new novel, SHALIMAR
THE CLOWN, in a church. In a church? Yeah.
The pastor was sitting right next to Rushdie.
Kind of a nice ecumenical moment there.
*The place was packed, standing-room-only,
with Pasadena literati. Never saw so many in
one spot (least of all a church).
*No wonder that fanatics and suicide bombers hate
a brainy, expressive crowd like that. No
wonder that Rushdie, a novelist, would turn
out to be the storm-crow for an ever-gathering
tempest of mayhem.
*The old boy looked pretty good. He's lost weight,
marriage is agreeing with him and his new book
is partly set in Los Angeles.

*No sign of Mrs Rushdie, top model, chef, sometime
Bollywood actress and a longtime BEYOND THE BEYOND
politico-cheesecake favorite.
