I'm in Washington, DC

The glamorous capital of the Global War on Terror.

Since I was last here, the anti-carbomb Jersey

Barriers, formerly a grim raw cement or scary

aviation-orange, have been repainted a

tasteful forest green.

It's as if the Maginot Line had been done-over

by Nancy Reagan's decorators. Most every

crucial crossroads also features one or two

discreet, creepy, lumbering, smoke-windowed

Chevy Suburban armored SUVs. I didn't take

their pictures. I didn't figure the owners

would take kindly to it.

Some aspects of Washington never seem to

change.
