Mysteries of Los Angeles

Given that streetlights can be solar-powered in Los Angeles,

why aren't they ALL solar-powered?

What the heck kind of termite eats solid glass brick?

Beyond this railing is a quarter-acre of state-owned

"property." It is a slope of land that adjoins a massive

freeway. It is not a park. No one looks after it.

It is completely walled off and physically inaccessible.

It is basically an overgrown vacant lot, thick with

smoggy exhaust exhalations and ceaselessly

roaring with traffic. It exists without direct human intervention

and must be one of the wildest places in the city.

Someone, a daring teenager presumably, used some kind

of machine to pull the steel bars apart. A full-sized adult

could not fit through there... but someone must

have wriggled through and been noticed and

somehow reported. Later, somebody else came

by... some kind of authority? and hastily patched the hole

with woven-wire.

What kind of surreal Ballardian excess was going on

in this anomalous patch of earth, and why must it

be guarded so jealously?
