If you ever wondered why Russia was the byword
for organized crime and corruption, you should
see this film. It's not a great movie, but it made
a mint in Russia because the locals understand it
as a testament of sorts to what has really gone
on.
You can just kinda name-check it on your
fingers as the footage rolls by: protection
rackets, Afghan war vets, Kremlin cliques,
swap meets, barter arrangements, media
purchases, hookers, alcoholism, the
nouveau riche, mob hits, voluntary exile,
surreptitious videocams, man, "Tycoon"
has got it all. It's a "Citizen Kane"
of the oligarch era.
