A brash campaign designed to deter London Underground riders from indulging in foul-smelling foods left some Italians with a bad taste in their mouths. A poster -- with a photo of a jowly fellow sitting on a train, surrounded by strings of garlic and Italian meats -- contained the admonishment, "Please don't eat smelly food," instigating a cloud of complaints. "We considered this poster to be very offensive to the Italian image (and) Italian products.... It is a caricature of Italians," said a staffer at the Italian Embassy in London. The railway pulled the poster, and a spokeswoman apologized. "It was meant to be a light-hearted attempt to stop travelers eating smelly food," she said.
