After research reports showed that Diebold's paperless machines could be rigged without anyone knowing it, activists expressed concern that the company could fix the machines to elect certain candidates. Diebold's electronic touch-screen voting machines have been used in many state and national elections, despite their lack of security and auditable paper trails. After news came out last year that Diebold CEO Walden O'Dell was a top fundraiser for President Bush, activists raised concerns about the possible conflict of interest and the integrity of elections that can't be verified with a paper backup.
