A convoy bringing tribal leaders to Kabul for Saturday's installation of the new Afghan government was reportedly attacked by U.S. warplanes who mistook it for a column of al-Quaida and Taliban fighters. At least 65 people were reported killed. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld confirmed the attack, saying that the Americans received intelligence describing the column as carrying al-Qaida leaders. The convoy of 12 trucks was travelling on a back road to avoid a local Taliban official they believed would try and stop it from reaching Kabul.
