Passage: Hosea Williams, 74

Williams, a top lieutenant of Martin Luther King Jr., never lost the combative spirit that led him from the obscurity of a government agricultural chemist's job to the forefront of the civil rights movement. Williams was jailed more than 125 times and once took a traffic conviction all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court before losing. In recent years, Williams was the director of Hosea's Feed the Hungry and Homeless campaign in Atlanta.
