Passage: John Chafee, 77

A moderate, even liberal, Republican in a heavily Democratic state, Chafee served Rhode Island as both senator and governor. Chafee, who died Sunday night from cardiac arrest, also did stints as a state representative and secretary of the Navy. The scion of one of Rhode Island's most powerful families, Chafee was reelected to the Senate three times, serving nearly 23 years.
