Malaysian Leader Fights Back

Malaysia's ousted deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim appeared Tuesday in a Kuala Lumpur courtroom to face charges of corruption and illegal sex acts. The 51-year-old Anwar displayed a swollen eye and bruised arm, injuries he said were inflicted by police. Since his dismissal, the onetime heir apparent to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has campaigned for the end of Mahathir's conservative 17-year reign. Allegations of police brutality could intensify demonstrations that have choked the Muslim nation for days.
