Linux Gets Trade Show, Ezine

Sensing big market potential in an OS that is essentially free, IDG launches a trade show and Web magazine aimed at the open-source Linux operating system.

As another sign that the upstart Linux operating system is gaining steam, International Data Group said Wednesday it will sponsor a trade show and launch an online magazine devoted to the open-source OS.

Next month, the company will launch LinuxWorld, a Web publication aimed at what IDG says is the more than 7 million people craving technical coverage of Linux and other technologies relating to the Unix-based operating system.

IDG will also produce the first LinuxWorld Conference and Expo on 1-4 March 1999 at the San Jose Convention Center in California.

"I'm pleased to see IDG get so deeply involved in the Linux community with a new online magazine and global event," said Linux creator Linus Torvald. "The audience of Linux professionals will be well served."

IDG (IDGB) said the Linux market ranks among the most-noticed new technology markets, with an annual growth rate exceeding 100 percent.

The LinuxWorld site will launch in mid-October and will contain technical information, Linux "scenarios" in the enterprise, feature articles, community discussion areas, and product reviews.

Linux software is considered very reliable, because it is nurtured by independent developers worldwide, rather than a single company.
