Banc One, a rapidly growing bank with branches in 12 states, said Wednesday it had signed networking and computer services contracts worth more than US$1.8 billion with AT&T and IBM.
The bank said in a statement that the "Technology One Alliance" with IBM and AT&T would upgrade its technology, improve retail and business banking services, and support its Year 2000 requirements.
Under a six-year, $1.4 billion contract, the AT&T Solutions unit will manage Banc One's voice and data networking requirements, transforming its communications networks into a state-of the-art Internet protocol-based networking platform.
Under a seven-year, $420 million contract, IBM's Global Services unit will manage a majority of Banc One's data center operations, including helpdesk support and mainframe/mid-range server management.
After its acquisition of First Chicago NBD Corp., Banc One will be the fifth-largest US bank in terms of assets and will be No. 2 in terms of deposits and credit cards.
