The Nasdaq shot up 31.92, or 2.02 percent, to 1610.82. Asia: Most exchanges remained closed for New Year. The major bourses that opened - Bangkok, Tokyo, and Manila - all showed strong advances. Europe: All major exchanges save that of the Netherlands - down fractionally - were up, a reflection of positive earning reports at home and unclouded skies over foreign markets.
