Lee in Limbo

Senate Republicans again torpedoed a Clinton nomination and put the battle over Bill Lann Lee's confirmation as the nation's top civil rights cop into limbo until it could be fought anew next year. Lee's supporters were able to crush Orrin Hatch's efforts to kill the nomination outright. The White House says it's studying options, but declined to speculate on Dianne Feinstein's suggestion that Clinton appoint Lee on an interim basis, a move that doesn't require Senate approval.
