A US-Japan trade dispute suddenly got serious today when the the US said it was closing its ports to Japanese ships. The move - which was later delayed for one day - came after Japanese shipping companies said they wouldn't pay some US$4 million in fines imposed after talks to loosen rules on handling American cargo at Japanese ports failed to bring a deal.
