Nobel: Peace

Jody Williams of Putney, Vermont, and her International Campaign to Ban Landmines received the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize - an announcement met with a pledge from Yeltsin that Russia will sign a global treaty banning landmines. Norway's Nobel Committee said in the prize citation that Williams and her group have made "a ban on anti-personnel mines from a vision to a feasible reality" and added that the panel hopes the award will help increase support for the treaty.
