Wilson Kipketer, a Kenyan-born citizen of Denmark, broke Sebastian Coe's 16-year-old world record in the 800-meter run. Coe's mark, one of the most enduring in track and field history, was 1 minute, 41.74 seconds. At a meet in Zurich, Kipketer covered the distance in 1:41.24.
